The Port of Soller is a wonderful little village situated in one of Mallorca’s most beautiful horseshoe harbours on the west coast. Surrounded by the Tramuntana mountains, this town has the best of both worlds – magnificent mountain scenery and a sea view to boot. It has not been over-developed in the past and is now a sophisticated holiday destination. Add to this the proximity of the charming inland town of Soller (5 km away and accessible by vintage tram), and you have the almost perfect place for a walking holiday. The bay is lined by a sandy beach with a pedestrianised promenade behind, where you will find cafes, restaurants and shops.
The variety of walks on Mallorca is remarkable, ranging from gentle strolls along peaceful country lanes through to energetic hikes on cobbled donkey trails. There are opportunities to do ½ day walks, returning to Puerto Soller or Soller for lunch, to do linear walks along the GR 221 and return by local bus or taxi, to walk down to a beautiful cove and return by boat – the possibilities are endless. Whilst we have an idea of each day’s walk we will take a view on the weather forecast and how everyone is feeling.
Mallorca – The Best of the GR221
These walks are based on the best sections of the renowned GR221: ‘The Archduke’s Path from Valldemosa to Deia, the gully of Biniaraix and the Cuber Lake and the epic linear walk to Cala Tuente to return by boat. To make the most of these walks we will spend two nights at a hotel in Deia which is perhaps best known as the former home of Robert Graves. It has become one of Mallorca’s most prestigious resorts due to its spectacular location and exquisitely preserved atmosphere. We will then move to Puerto Soller which will be our base for the next 2 days walking.
This trip is suitable for those of you who consider yourself ‘hill-walkers’, the trip involves longer days on good paths and tracks. A good level of fitness is required as these treks can involve considerable amounts of ascent and descent and the occasional difficult day on rougher paths. There may be an occasional day with ascents/descents of up to 2500ft. We would expect you to have previous experience of walking on consecutive days in the mountains. Expect to walk 5 -7 hours per day.
