February – A few words of wisdom from my ‘Walker’s Year Book’

My Walker’s Year Book says:

‘If you’re hoping for dry weather in February, remember this proverb: ‘If in February there be no rain, ‘tis neither good for hay nor grain.’

There is considerable truth in this, as February rain will be more easily absorbed into the soil to avoid drought conditions in the drier summer months. So when you are out walking in February, don’t curse the rain too much!

Hmm – not so sure about that this year – there is nowhere for the rain to go. Hence our February walks are being planned around routes that are as dry as possible. This does actually mean that we are able to maintain good pace rather than stopping for stiles and gates, however, it will be good to get back to normal walks – roll on spring!!
