Lake District trip, June 2017

Last week saw our first ‘NCNW Couples Trip’ to the Southern Lake District. Based at The Brown Horse Inn, Winster we did two magnificent day walks. After coffee on Sunday morning we walked 13 miles around the gorgeous Winster and Lyth Valleys interrupted by a much appreciated lunch stop at The Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank.

After a very hearty breakfast on Monday we walked 4 miles along the Western side of Windermere to Wray Castle for coffee and cake – yes cake!! If you are ever in the Lakes, the coffee shop here is definitely worth a visit. It is only a small self service cafe but the cakes are all delicious and the surroundings are surreal.

We then walked to Hawkshead via the hillock known as Latterbarrow.  The summit area of Latterbarrow is a bumpy plateau crowned by a tall beacon. It’s said to be a memorial but there is no plaque, and no-one can remember to whom, or any other reason why it’s there; however the views from here are absolutely amazing. After a much needed pub lunch in Hawkshead we then walked the stunning bridleway over Claife Heights back to Bowness. Another 13 mile day enjoyed by all.
